Well, he'd have to change to some other sort of status, or he'd become illegal. Some students find employers to file work petitions for them, but this has become harder of late as these petitions are limited in number and run out very quickly each year. This year's quota has already come and gone and there will be no more until next April. If he wanted to continue to study in grad school, that might also be possible. However, if his status runs out before he can apply for something else, he won't be able to change here and would have to go home to apply. If he's out of status for 6 months or more, he would be ineligible for any visa for at least 3 years, so at that point, he wouldn't be able to get a visa to return even if he left.

What George mention is true but also if your friend is on F1 status he can stay for 1 more year doing he's OPT if is approve. That will buy him some time to find a way to change he's status. Now if you so interested in that friend you can also marry him and file a petition for immediate relative, I-130 & I-485 change of status that will resolve his problem LOL.

Very hard the laws have changed he would have to go back. Just to apply and it will take a long time.
