The Schengen visa (type C) is valid for a stay of up to 90 days within a six months period. It is issued to tourist or business visitors of those countries that require to hold a prior visa to travel to Italy and the other 24 Schengen countries. The visa application involves a fee of รข‚¬ 60.00. The student visa (type D) is a long-stay national visa valid for Italy, however it also authorizes a 90 day stay in the other Schengen countries for 90 days per semester. The visa is free of charge for Italy. http://www.consdetroit.esteri.it/NR/rdonlyres/F15EA20D-8919-41AD-981A-C8B705A9E483/0/STUDIOGIUGNO20102.pdf .. The same application form will be used for both visa types for Italy. For main purpose of travel enter study in column 21.

As you seem to be from the US you don't need to worry about Schengen Visas. US citizens are entitled to stay in Italy (and the Schengen Zone) visa free from 90 days out of every 180 days. Schengen Visas are for people from countries that are not covered by the Schengen visa waiver scheme. Because you are going to Italy as a student you will need a Student Visa, and that's what you should apply for.
